QUARTERLY

Manufacturing reported a gain of 1.0% over last quarter adding 2007 employees. Sector activity was mixed. The largest growing sector was Non-Electrical Machinery (35) up 441 employees. Expansions at a couple of large companies in Computer & Office Equipment (357) contributed the bulk of the increase. Stone-Clay-Glass (32) reported the second largest gain adding 284. Seasonal increases in Ready -Mixed Concrete (3273) and a couple of projects in Concrete Products (327) caused much of the gain. Lumber (24) added 235 employees and Transportation Equipment (37) added 237. Six sectors experienced losses over the quarter. Printing-Publishing (27) down 114 employees reported the largest decrease. Losses were offset by seasonal gains in Greeting Cards (277). Leather (31) experienced the second greatest loss down 62 employees due to a layoff at a major employer.


ANNUAL

Manufacturing employment rose 2.2% over last year gaining 4260 employees. Electrical Machinery (36) up 1307, registered the largest annual gain. Yearlong expansions in Semi-Conductors & Related Devices (3674) coupled with the addition of about 450 employees from January SIC changes contributed to the increase. Non-Electrical Machinery (35) generated 839 new employees, the second largest gain in the Manufacturing industry. Its largest growing component was Misc Industrial & Commercial Machinery & Equipment (3598) which contains machine shops. The third biggest sector gain occurred in Transportation Equipment (37) up 742 employees due to expansions in Motor Vehicles & Parts (376). Food Products (20) reported the largest loss dropping 967 employees. One plant closure and cutbacks in Meat Products (201) affected the decrease.
