Mining employment dropped 0.6% losing 76 employees. Sector activity was mixed with only one of the four sectors losing employment. The declining sector was Oil & Gas (13) down 209 employees. Decreased drilling activity occurred in Oil & Gas Field Services (138) down 122 employees and Crude Petroleum & Natural Gas (131) down 89. Employment increases were fairly equal with each of the three remaining sectors adding better than 40 employees. Coal Mining (12) grew by 48 employees over the quarter. The temporary shut down of one mine was offset by expansions in a number of other mines. Metal Mining (10) added 45 employees. Increases were strongest in Ferroalloy Ores (106). Employment in Mining & Quarry Nonmetal (14) grew by 42. Project increases in Sand & Gravel (144) and Crushed & Broken Stone (142) accounted for most of the sector gain.

Mining employment dropped over the year losing 1560 employees down 10.3%. Every sector of the industry experienced losses. Oil & Gas Extraction (13) registered the largest decrease dropping 1095 employees. Yearlong declining employment due to lessened drilling activity in Oil & Gas Field Services (138), down 637, and Crude Petroleum & Natural Gas (131), down 461, occurred. Closure of one mine and cutbacks at several others caused Coal Mining (12) to drop 411 employees. Mining & Quarry Nonmetal (14) declined over the year by 49 employees. About half of the loss was due to decreased business in Sand & Gravel (144). Metal Mining (10) employment was flat reporting a minor loss of 5 employees. Within Metal Mining gains in Gold & Silver Ores (104) were offset by losses in Iron Ores (101), Copper Ores (102) and Ferroalloy Ores (106).
