QUARTERLY
Employment in TCPU showed minor increases up 0.6% adding 736. Telephone Communications (481) and Cable & Other Pay Television Services (484) each added around 300 employees contributing to the quarterly increase of 681 in Communications (48). Trucking-Warehousing (42) continued to expand adding 299 employees. Increases were impacted by seasonal summer moving. Transport Services (47) grew by 113 experiencing some seasonal growth for Arrangement of Passenger Transportation (472) which contains travel agencies and tour operators. Water Transportation (44) which contains marinas seasonally added 54 employees. Electric-Gas-Sanitary Services (49) dropped 401 employees. Layoffs in many firms due to cutbacks on a major clean-up project caused the large loss. Local Transportation (41) down 31 reflected the off-peak demand for transport to ski areas.
ANNUAL
Moderate annual growth occurred in TCPU with the addition of 3553 employees for a gain of 3.2%. Air Transportation (45) reports a hefty increase over the year of 5299 employees. These figures, however, are deceptive in that they reflect SIC changes covering about 5500 from Trucking-Warehousing (42) in January, and not necessarily growth. Trucking-Warehousing shows a loss of 3173 employees. Employment gains in this sector have offset the loss of 5500 which occurred in January. Communication (48) added 1678 employees. Increases were centered in Cable & Other Pay Television Services (484). Local Transportation (41) gained 528 employees. Expansion of service to ski areas and gambling towns caused the growth in this sector. Electric-Gas-Sanitary Services (49) dropped 1087 employees due to downsizing at a major clean-up project.
