Government employment seasonally declined over the quarter dropping 10,817 employees down 3.6%. Local Government was responsible for the employment downturn as schools closed for the summer. Employment in Local Government dropped by 11,209. Losses were offset somewhat by hiring for municipal summer programs and maintenance activities. Federal government rose by 368 over the previous quarter. Gains were seasonal due to summer hiring for the Forest Service and National Park Service. State government added 24 employees. Schools decreased by about 600 for the summer. Losses were offset by the addition of over 300 in August and September for the State Fair and summer hiring at the Department of Highways. Department of Corrections noted a gain due to expansions at its Fremont County prison.
ANNUAL
Government employment grew 1.9% over third quarter a year ago adding 5429 employees. Local government saw most of the employment gain up 5104 employees. Increased hiring in schools in Educational Services (82) contributed significantly to the gain in Local government. Other sectors with notable employment gains over the year were Health Services (80) and General Government (91). Annually, State government rose 1033 employees. Half of its increase occurred in Educational Services with the majority of the remainder in Justice, Public Order & Safety (92). Federal government was the only sector to lose employment dropping 708 employees. Cutbacks preceding the closure of Fitzsimmons Army Hospital accounted for the loss of about 460 employees. Cutbacks at the Air Force Academy accounted for the loss of about 270 employees.
