Employment growth in TCPU was fairly flat this quarter moving up only 0.8% adding 976 employees. Sector activity was mainly positive with only Local Transportation (41) declining. The largest sector gain occurred in Trucking-Warehousing (42) up 360 employees. Gains were seasonal due to summer demand for moving and construction hauling. Communication (48) added 271 employees. Growth was exclusive to telephone communications with some decline in cable television services. Air Transportation (45), influenced by July and August vacationing, grew by 176 employees. Transport Services (47) which includes travel and tour arrangers seasonally expanded adding 100 employees. Increased activity revolving around hazardous waste cleanup projects was responsible for the addition of 64 employees in Electric-Gas-Sanitation Services (45). Local Transportation, the only sector to decline, lost 39 workers. Losses were seasonal as the ski season ended.
ANNUAL
Annual employment growth in TCPU registered 2.1% with 2447 new employees. Air Transportation (45) supported about 75% of the industry growth adding 1787 employees. Scheduled Air Transportation generated the bulk of the additional employment up by 1171. Growth was split between Denver and El Paso county with Denver’s gain in employment heavier than El Paso’s. Air Courier Services added 444 employees. Expansions by two companies accounted for most of the gain. The next largest sector increase occurred in Communication (48) up 386 employees. Within Communications, Cable & Other Pay Television Services (484) is up 274 employees and Telephone Communication (481) 142. Growth in cable television appeared to have peaked in first quarter 1997 and has lost employment every quarter since then. Trucking-Warehousing (42) dropped 153 employees over the year. Losses were the result of closures, layoffs and misreporting corrections.
