Wholesale Trade employment increased by 1521 employees over last quarter for a gain of 1.5%. Durable Goods (50), the larger of the two sectors within Wholesale, added the greater amount of employees over the quarter, up 1110. All but one subsector of Durable Goods increased with Electric Goods (506) showing the largest gain. Expansions in Electronic Parts & Equipment (5065), which includes the distribution of computer boards, communications equipment and satellite dishes, generated the bulk of the gain of 488 in Electrical Goods. Lumber & Other Construction Materials (503) added 178 employees. Low interest rates, strong home sales along with favorable weather for building caused increased demand and employment in this category.
Nondurable Goods (51) added 410 employees. The largest quarterly gain occurred in Drugs, Drug Proprietaries & Druggist Sundries (5122) up 247 employees. Increases were the result of hiring by one employer during its start up phase of operations here in Colorado. Groceries & Related Products (514) added 200 employees with more than half of the jump from seasonal work in the distribution of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Since third quarter a year ago Wholesale Trade employment has grown 4.5% adding 4501 employees. The majority of the employment increase occurred in Durable Goods (50) up 3750 employees. Expansions mainly for the distribution of computer and peripheral equipment within Professional & Commercial Equipment & Supplies (504) generated 1246 employees. Electrical Goods (506) reported the second largest gain within Durable Goods adding 1034. Yearlong expansions in the distribution of electronic parts and equipment by a number of companies were responsible for the employment growth. Lumber & Other Construction Materials (503) added 488 employees over the year and Machinery Equipment & Supplies (508) added 484.
Employment in Nondurable Goods (51) rose by 750 or 2.0%. Drug, Drug Proprietaries & Druggists Sundries (512) reported the largest subsector increase up by 506 employees. Gains occurred over the course of the year but were expedited by the staffing-up of a large company this quarter. Paper & Paper Products (511) incurred the second largest gain up by 154 employees.
