QUARTERLY Quarterly, Wholesale Trade picked up 974 new employees for a gain of 0.9%. Durable Goods (50) incurred most of the gain increasing by 975 employees. The largest subsector to increase was involved in the distribution of Electrical Goods, specifically electronic parts. Expansions at a Douglas county establishment and temporary hiring at an Arapahoe county business generated some of the increase of 336 in Electrical Goods. Small employment increases at a number of businesses in Lumber & Other Construction Materials added 174 over the quarter. Heightened demand for construction products usually occurs during this quarter necessitating some seasonal hiring. Increases of 159 in Professional & Commercial Equipment & Supplies were derived almost exclusively by increased employment in computer and peripheral equipment and software distribution. Machinery, Equipment & Supplies added 115 workers. Most of the gain occurred as a result of increased staffing in Construction & Mining Machinery & Equipment. Employment in Nondurable Goods (51) fell by 2. Groceries & Related Products added 134 workers, the result of seasonal staffing for the distribution of fruits and vegetables. Employment in Drugs, Drug Proprietaries & Sundries continued to advance adding another 97 over the quarter. Losses of 218 in Misc Nondurable Goods due to decreased seasonal demand for farm supplies and nursery and greenhouse products offset gains. ANNUAL Since last year third quarter Wholesale Trade grew 0.6% adding 592 employees. SIC changes in January moving about 2200 employees out of the industry have stunted growth figures. Despite the loss of almost 1600 in Durable Goods from SIC changes, employment in the Durable Goods (50) sector is up 826 employees. Annual gains in Durable Goods were bolstered by the addition of 814 to Professional & Commercial Equipment & Supplies resulting from distribution increases of computers and peripheral equipment and software. Lumber & Other Construction Materials expanded by 495 prompted by the current building and remodeling boom and the addition of over 200 from SIC changes. Despite the loss of more than 300 from SIC changes Electrical Goods has grown by 232. Most of the gain occurred in the distribution of electronic parts and communication equipment, which includes satellite dishes and semiconductor devices. Nondurable Goods (51) reported a loss of 235 since third quarter a year ago rebounding from the loss of 650 due to January SIC changes. Petroleum & Petroleum Products down 527 suffered corporate layoffs and January SIC losses of 416. Groceries & Related Products declined by 381. Half of the loss was SIC related and the remainder was lower than usual seasonal hiring for produce processing. Increased staffing of sales offices and distribution centers for Drugs & Drug Proprietaries & Sundries happily added 501.
