QUARTERLY

Government employment rose 12,115 employees up 4.2% over last quarter. Gains in employment were mainly seasonal. Local government added 10,962 employees. Increases occurred in Educational Services (82), up around 15,000 employees, due to school returning from summer intermission. Executive, Legislative & General Government Except Finance (91) dropped over 3000 employees when most cities let go of their temporary summer help hired for recreation and outdoor maintenance projects. Amusement & Recreation Services (79) also seasonally declined, down almost 1500. State government increased 2355 employees with the bulk of the gain occurring in Educational Services. Federal Government declined by 1202 employees. Administration of Environmental Quality & Housing Programs (95) registered the largest decrease due to seasonal layoffs in Forest Service and permanent layoffs in Bureau of Reclamation and National Park Service.


ANNUAL

Employment in Government grew 1.6% adding 4849 employees over a year ago. Local government added 5367 employees. Educational Services (82) gained about 3000 over the year and Executive, Legislative & General Government (91) added about 1600. State government increased 957 employees. Increases were found in Educational Services (82), Justice, Public Order & Safety (92) and Administration of Economic Programs. Staff additions in schools, expansions at correctional facilities and the addition of a year round show arena on the Pueblo State Fair grounds contributed to the subsector gains. Federal government employment dropped 1475. The closure of Lowry AFB, layoffs at Resolution Trust Corp, the Bureau of Reclamation, the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Center and National Parks caused the decline.
