Since last quarter Manufacturing employment has risen 1.1% and added 2203 employees. Printing-Publishing (27) affected the largest increase up 734 employees. Seasonal activity in Greeting Cards created the bulk of the increase. Non Electrical Machinery (35), up 334, experienced the second largest gain for the quarter. Growth resulted from expansions of unknown duration in Computer & Office Equipment (357). Food Products (20) added 296 employees. The largest subsector increases occurred in Sugar & Confectionery Products (206) and Bakery Products (205) due to seasonal production for Christmas sales. Increases in Sugar & Confectionery Products also showed seasonal growth for processing of sugar beets following harvesting. Electrical Machinery (36) added 299 employees with the majority of its increase due to expansions occurring in Electronic Components & Accessories (367), specifically, Semiconductors & Related Devices (3674).

Manufacturing employment dropped 0.2% losing 299 employees. Sector activity was mixed. Chemicals (28) reflected the largest drop in employment over the year down 5989. SIC changes covering about 6000 employees to TCPU in January caused this decrease. Primary Metals (33) suffered a loss of 439 employees. SIC changes in January from Rolling, Drawing & Extruding of Nonferrous Metals (335) to other Manufacturing sectors caused most of its loss. Transportation Equipment (37) reflected the industry's largest gain, up 1899 employees. Increases were the result of expansions in two subsectors. Electrical Machinery (36) added 1220 employees. Growth in Electronic Components & Accessories
(367), which contains the manufacturing of semiconductors, was responsible for most of the sector gain. Furniture (25) added 948 employees. Better than half of its gain occurred in Household Furniture (251) due to January SIC changes.
