Mining dropped 4.3% to its lowest level in five years. Employment is down 649 employees. All sectors declined. Oil & Gas Extraction (13) took the biggest cut falling 470 employees. Layoffs and some closures affected activity this quarter in Crude Petroleum & Natural Gas (1311) down 188. Declines in Oil & Gas Field Services (138) down 284 were the result of less activity. Restructuring and a large layoff caused Coal Mining (12) to lose 68 employees. Mining & Quarry Nonmetal (14) dropped 61 employees. Losses were associated with a seasonal slowing in Sand & Gravel (144) as demand for construction product decreases through the winter. Metal Mining (10) dropped 51 employees. Layoffs in Ferroalloy Ores Except Vanadium (106) offset gains in Gold & Silver Ores (104).

The Mining industry dropped 7.8% from a year ago losing 1231 employees. Sector activity was mixed. Oil & Gas (13) registered a loss of 1656. Decreased drilling and support activity over the year created a loss of 1054 in Oil & Gas Field Services (138). SIC changes in January along with yearlong layoffs and streamlining caused the loss of 614 in Crude Petroleum & Natural Gas (131). Coal Mining (12) decreased 49 employees due to layoffs occurring this quarter. On the bright side increases were reported in Metal Mining (10), up 310 employees, and Mining & Quarry Nonmetal (14) up 165. Growth in Metal Mining was the result of administrative expansions in Gold & Silver Ores (104) and mining increases in Ferroalloy Ores Except Vanadium (106).
