QUARTERLY

TCPU experienced an exceptionally strong fourth quarter up 1.9% adding 2131 employees. Trucking-Warehousing (42) generated the greatest share of the industry increase adding 1651 employees. Increases were seasonal due to high demand for the delivery of Christmas packages. Increases also resulted from picking up about 500 employees missing since June of 1995 and erroneously reported as laid off. Communication (48) added 508 employees. Cable & Other Pay Television Services (484) experienced the bulk of the sector gain up 429 employees. Radio & Television Broadcasting Stations (483) added 89 employees with gains occurring due to expansions in radio stations. As the skiing season got underway employment rose 402 in Local Transportation (41). Electric-Gas-Sanitary Services (49) reported the largest decrease down 672 employees. The winding down of one project and layoffs at another project in Sanitary Services (495) created the drop.

ANNUAL

TCPU added 9841 employees over last year increasing 9.4%. All sectors, except Water Transportation (44) which lost 2 employees, rose over the year. Electric-Gas-Sanitary Services (49) reflects the largest annual gain up 3509 employees. Layoffs and cutbacks in Combination Electric & Gas & Other Utility (493) and Sanitary Services (495) offset the addition of 6000 employees in January from SIC changes. Service expansion at both the Colorado Springs airport and Denver International added 1306 employees to Air Transportation (45). Despite cutbacks at a major airline and closure of another service was replaced by other airlines. Trucking-Warehousing (42) added 1355 employees. Expansions at a number of larger companies and the start-up of many smaller freighting companies in Trucking, Except Local (4213) contributed about half of the sector gain. Expansions in Courier Services, Except by Air (4215) added the other half of the increase.
