QUARTERLY

Government employment grew 4.4% over last quarter adding 12,548 employees. Employment in Local and State government rose adding 11,355 and 1834 employees, respectively. Employment in Federal government fell losing 641. Local government experienced three major quarterly changes: Schools returned to session adding 16,911 employees, summer programs and summer maintenance projects were completed dropping employment in Recreation & Amusements (79) by 1393 and General Government (91) by 3583. Gains in State government were also tied to schools returning to session. Employment in State Educational Services (82) rose 2599. Federal government experienced seasonal losses in National Park Service and the Forest Service as summer activities came to a close. Nonseasonal losses resulted from cutbacks associated with the closing of Fitzsimons Army Medical Center.


ANNUAL

Employment in Government declined over a year ago dropping 0.2% for a loss of 566 employees. State and Federal government lost employment while Local government expanded. State government encountered the largest loss dropping 4566 employees. Most of the loss occurred in education in January of this year as a result of discontinuing to count work study students as employed. Federal government dropped 1779 employees. Closure of the Resolution Trust Corp and the Denver Federal Center Bureau of Mines facility accounted for much of the loss. But, cutbacks were prevalent during the year. Cutbacks claimed employment losses for the US Geologic Survey, Bureau of Reclamation, the National Park Service and VA medical centers. Cutbacks also occurred with the preparation for closing of the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center. Local government added 5779 employees. Growth occurred in education and general government.
