Employment in Wholesale Trade was up 1.2% over last quarter adding 1221. Durable Goods (50) added 668 employees or 55% of the industry increase. Growth in Durable Goods was driven by expansions in Professional & Commercial Equipment & Supplies (504), up 320 and Electrical Goods (506) up 269. Computer & Peripheral Equipment & Software (5045) generated most of the increase in Professional & Commercial Equipment & Supplies. Electronic Parts & Equipment which contains semiconductors, multiplexors and satellite dishes drove the growth in Electrical Goods.
Nondurable Goods (51) grew by 553 employees over last quarter. About half of the growth occurred in Groceries & Related Products (514) up 270 employees, propelled by seasonal hiring increases in the wholesale distribution of fresh fruits and vegetables. Paper & Paper Products (511) added 141 employees over the quarter with growth occurring mainly in Stationery & Office Supplies due to upcoming seasonal demands for tax season office supplies.

Wholesale Trade grew 3.4% over a year ago adding 3313 employees. Durable Goods gained 1776 employees, a little more than half of the industry increase. Two subsectors generated the bulk of the increase in Durable Goods: Lumber & Other Construction Materials (503) up 796 employees and Electrical Goods (506) up 745. Corporate relocations contributed significantly to the increase in Lumber & Other Construction Materials. Yearlong expansions in the wholesale distribution of electronic parts and electronic communications equipment contributed to the employment rise in Electrical Goods.
Nondurable Goods (51) gained 1537 employees. Drug, Drug Proprietaries & Druggists Sundries (512) up 366 showed the largest gain within Nondurable Goods. Yearlong expansions and the startup of a labor intensive company midyear in El Paso county contributed to the gain. Misc Nondurable Goods (519) reported the second largest gain up 305 employees. Growth occurred in the distribution of Books, Periodicals & Newspapers (5192) and Nondurable Goods Not Elsewhere Classified (5199).
