QUARTERLY

TCPU reported strong employment growth gaining 3373 employees since last quarter for an increase of 2.8%. Gains were strongest in the Communications (48) sector where 1690 employees were added. Expansions in cellular phone service and local & long distance phone service boosted employment. Air Transportation (45) added 1497 employees. Increases were seasonal with extra staffing added for Christmas shipping in air courier services. Airport terminal services reported seasonal increases particularly in ski resort airports. Local Transportation (41) gained 463 employees. Gains were seasonal, the result of increased transport to and from ski destinations. Electric-Gas-Sanitary Services (49) was one of two sectors to lose employment. Employment dropped by 173. Completion of a couple of clean-up projects on the west slope and small layoffs at a number of firms accounted for the decline. Water Transportation (44) seasonally declined by 114 employees.


ANNUAL

TCPU gained 5017 employees over fourth quarter a year ago an increase of 4.3%. Air Transportation (45) reported the largest sector increase adding 2010 employee. About 1000 of the gain occurred in scheduled air transportation and about 600 in air courier service. Gains in scheduled air transportation had been in both Denver and El Paso counties but are now relegated to Denver county. Communications (48) added 1715 new employees over a year ago, the second largest sector increase. Growth in telephone communication accounted for most of the new employment adding almost 1300. Local Transportation (41) grew by 540 employees. Expansion of transport service to ski areas and shuttle service to the gambling casinos accounted for the increased employment. Trucking-Warehousing (42) gained 341 employees. Over-the-road transport experienced closures and cutbacks resulting in a drop of about 500 employees. Local trucking, courier service by land and miniwarehousing added employment to the sector.
