Employment in the Manufacturing industry rose slightly gaining 141 employees over the quarter for a 0.1% increase. Food Products (20) reported the largest sector gain up 506. Sugar & Confectionery Products generated the largest subsector gain up 399 employees. Seasonal hiring for sugar beet processing and extra staffing for Christmas candy production caused the increase. Printing-Publishing (27) incurred the second largest employment sector gain up 422. Seasonal hiring for Greeting Card production accounted for most of the increase. Non-Electrical Machinery (35) experienced the largest employment loss dropping by 396. Cutbacks beginning in third quarter and continuing into this quarter at two large companies manufacturing computer storage devices contributed to the loss. The closure of one company involved in the production of Conveyors & Conveying Equipment and a production move out of state for another firm also contributed to the decline. Transpor-tation Equipment (37) fell by 244 employees due to layoffs undertaken in the Guided Missiles & Space Vehicles. Stone-Clay-Glass (32) dropped by 226 employees the result of seasonal layoffs involving concrete and concrete products.

Annual employment in the Manufacturing industry reported losses for the fifth quarter in a row. Annually, Manufacturing employment is down 1.0% having lost 1981 employees. The largest sector decline occurred in Non-Electrical Machinery (35) down 2440 employees. Layoffs and the movement of about 1500 from computer and office equipment manufacturing due to SIC changes in January accounted for the loss. Employment in Transportation Equipment (37) fell by 763 due to yearlong layoffs. Rubber-Misc Plastic (30) experienced a decline of 584 employees. SIC changes moving about 275 out of the sector and layoffs occurring over the year in one company accounted for the majority of sector losses. Stone-Clay-Glass (32) realized an increase of 622 over a year ago. Paralleling the growth in the Construction industry, demand for concrete and concrete products has risen, generating increased employment. A gain of 438 employees occurred in Instruments (38). SIC changes moving about 1600 into the sector were offset by layoffs in Search, Detection, Navigation, Guidance, Aeronautical & Nautical Systems, Instruments & Equipment and Surgical, Medical & Dental Instruments & Supplies.
