Telegraph & Other Message Communications added 415 with more than half of the gain undertaken by a major Colorado employer. Electric-Gas-Sanitation Services (49) lost 198 employees over the quarter. All subsectors declined, however, the largest loss occurred in Gas Production & Distribution due to the initial round of layoffs as a corporate office became regional and sold off assets. Trucking-Warehousing (42) dropped by 78 employees. Losses were seasonal declining at the end of the heavy summer moving period. Losses were offset by the addition of about 130 for holiday related non-air delivery service.

ANNUAL

TCPU ranked as the fourth largest expanding industry in Colorado gaining 11,386 employees growing 8.8%. Communications (48) was the largest growing sector adding 8950 employees. Approximately 5100 employees were added in January due to SIC changes but continued growth in local and long distance telephone and Telegraph & Other Message Communications generated the balance of the increase. Telegraph & Other Message Communications includes establishments engaged in furnishing nonvocal message communication services such as electronic mail and facsimile transmission services. Air Transportation (45) grew by 1690 employees. Most of the yearly gain occurred in Scheduled Air Transportation in Denver County due to service expansions at Denver International Airport. Local Transportation (41) was one of three sectors to lose employment over a year ago dropping by 294. Losses were driven by the transfer of local transport employees to local government and cutbacks in ambulance service. Electric-Gas-Sanitation Services (49) dropped by 221 employees. Yearlong cutbacks in Gas Production & Distribution caused most of the loss.
