CONSTRUCTION

(15 - 17)

This year's Construction increase is indicative of a strong Colorado economy. This year's increase of 11,112 is just shy of last year's growth of 11,208. The completion of the Denver International Airport did not negatively impact the strength in this sector. In 1993 growth was balanced between the Metro Denver area and the Balance of State. This year however, 65 percent of the increase in employment occurred outside the Metro Denver area. That is, the Balance of State had an increase in Construction employment of 18.6 percent!

General Building construction increased 3061. This is a higher gain than last year. While General Building construction was strong in the Metro Denver area with increases of 1285, the Balance of State employment increased 1776. Counties with over 200 employee gains in employment in this subsector include El Paso, Jefferson, Larimer and Pitkin.

Heavy Construction expanded 637 in 1994, approximately the same increase as last year. Last year the Denver Metro Area had a small increase with the Balance of State picking up the main portion of the increase. This year, the Metro Area lost 536 in Heavy Construction, leaving a large increase in the Balance of State at 1175. By county, Denver lost 407, while El Paso, Garfield, Pueblo and Weld gained a total of 621.

Special Trade contractors expanded by 7414, which is slower than last year's growth of 8346. Boulder, Eagle, El Paso, Jefferson, Garfield and Larimer experienced large increases, while no counties took significant losses.
