After a very strong year in 1993 with increases of 6196, Finance, Insurance & Real Estate growth slowed to 4077 in 1994. The 1993 employment gains were helped with historically low interest rates. In 1994 employment gains were not significantly reduced as interest rates were pushed up. No categories experienced losses.

Banking experienced very little growth up 91 employees. Denver county lost 493 employees, leaving increases in Banking in the rest of the Metro Denver area and the Balance of State.

Credit Agencies continues to show strength after last year's very strong increase of 1862. This category is up 659 employees for a growth rate of 6.1 percent. Counties with noticeable increases include Arapahoe up 130 and Denver up 265.

Other categories with strong increases include Securities & Commodities Brokers up 716, Insurance Carriers up 688, Insurance Agents up 736 and Real Estate up 1072. The Metro Denver area had larger increases than the Balance of State in all of these areas except Real Estate.

Not all employment in Insurance and Real Estate is covered by unemployment insurance. Many insurance and real estate agents are not covered under unemployment insurance so they are not counted in the totals in this publication. Please see definition of Covered Employer on page iv.
