Services experienced very strong growth up 31,814 to 480,477 employees. This represents an increase of 7.1 percent. Services is the largest category of the major industry groups with almost 28 percent of the total, and has enjoyed the largest employment gains in the 1990s. Services is expected to continue to expand in future years.
Business Services claimed 45 percent or 14,404 of the increase in Services. Counties with the largest increases include 4308 in Denver, 3677 in El Paso, 2256 in Arapahoe, 1231 in Adams and 1130 in Boulder. Within Business Services, the temporary help industry increased 6971. Colorado is a significant center for computer development and software design. This is especially true with the increases in employment in companies working with high tech communications and so called 'information highway' technologies. Computer programming and data processing services are located within Business Services and increased 3616.
Health Services, up 4976, had the second largest gains in employment behind Business Services. The increase was 4.6 percent versus last year's increase of 3103 or 2.9 percent.
Motion Pictures include employment in making motion pictures and video tapes, as well as video tape rental stores. Employment in this category increased 11.6 percent or 594, of which 233 was in video tape rental stores. In general, rental stores are in Services rather than in Retail Trade.
