Growth in Transportation, Communication & Public Utilities as a whole was consistent with last year. TCPU gained 3944 for a 4.0 percent increase, pushing the total number of employees in this group over 100,000 to 103,004. The increase last year was 4102 or 4.3 percent.
Trucking-Warehousing increased 1694. Noticeable increases were in Adams, Denver, El Paso and Weld counties. Forty percent of statewide employment in this sector is located in Adams county.
After an increase of 906 in 1993, Air Transportation took a nose dive this year with losses of 1460. Denver county shows this decrease as a major carrier has closed its Denver hub. However, the newly opened Denver International Airport will allow for future expansion of airlines wanting to increase operations there.
Communications experienced the largest increase in employment of any subsector in TCPU, up 3415. Arapahoe county took roughly half of the increase, up 1874, while El Paso county expanded by 924. Not all counties had gains though - Denver lost 269 employees.
Electric-Gas-Sanitation Public Utilities experienced decreases of 399 as companies in this sector have been laying off employees and consolidating operations.
