MANUFACTURING
(20 - 39)
The Manufacturing industry grew 0.5% adding 901 employees annually. This reflects a slowing from last years growth of 3736. Actually, Manufacturing employment fared well but looked slow due to the movement of about 6000 in January to TCPU for SIC reclassification. As a result of the large reclassification, Metro Denver showed an industry employment loss, and gains appear in Balance of State.
Transportation Equipment and Electrical Machinery added the largest number of new employees, up 1704 and 1645 employees, respectively. Within Transportation, Jefferson county showed the largest gain up 1243. Gains in Electrical Machinery predominated in Balance of State with El Paso county adding 785 employees, Larimer 372 and Boulder 226.
The third largest growing component of Manufacturing was Furniture up 938 employees. Almost half of the gain occurred in Household Furniture with most of the increase in Denver county due to SIC changes from Retail in January. Misc Furniture & Fixtures added 280 employees. Its growth was strongest in Boulder county due to production expansions.
Printing-Publishing added 783 employees and Rubber-Misc Plastic added 743. The increase in Printing-Publishing was more prevalent in the Metro area than Balance of State. Misc Publishing, Newspapers and Commercial Printing showed the greatest gains. Misc Plastics Products, a sector of Rubber-Misc Plastic, acquired employees from a SIC change but also saw expansions over the year.
Five sectors of Manufacturing declined, the largest being Chemicals. Chemicals dropped 6419 employees. A SIC change to TCPU in January accounted for the loss of slightly better than 6000 employees.
