Services





 The Services division is by far the largest of the major divisions in Colorado. The division added 26,841 jobs and $1.45 billion in wages in 1996. This represented a 2.3% and 11% increase respectively. The division has increased by 214,149 jobs and $7.3 billion in wages since 1987. This division continues to create a wide variety of jobs from maids and temporary service workers to computer programmers and engineers. Average annual wages increased in all two digit SIC’s with Museums-Zoos recording the smallest increase at .9% and Business Services recording the largest percentage increase at 7.3%.

 Hotels and Lodging establishments increased by 82 from the previous year. Total employment in this sector increased by 778 and average wages increased by 5.3%. Personal Services added 420 jobs with the average wage increasing by 6.1%.

 Half of the annualized increase in the Services Division occurred in the Business Services sector. The Business Services sector added 951 establishments, 13,833 jobs and the average annual salary increased by 7.3% to $27,209. Miscellaneous Business Services accounted for 3,956 of the increase. Personnel Supply Services registered a 3,201 job gain. The Computer Programming, Data Processing, and Other Computer Related Services sector added 4,969 in 1996 to average 37,977 jobs. The average annual wage in Computer Related Services increased 5.8% to $51,137.

 The Health Services sector added 3,062 jobs, which was a 2.6% increae from the prior year. Total Health Services wages increased by 6.4% or $230 million to reach $3.83 billion. Total employment was 119,371 in 1996. Home Health Care Services increased by 37 establishments and 1,002 jobs to 187 and 7,552 respectively. Private Hospital employment was down by 233 to 42,414 with average wages increasing 2.9% to $29,342.

 Engineering Services increased by 1,899 jobs to average 56,226 in 1996. The average wage increased by 6.8% to $42,169 per year. The counties with the most jobs in this sector are Denver (14,151), Arapahoe (10,616), Jefferson (8,303), El Paso (6,584) and Boulder (5,683).

 The only category to experience an annualized decline was Legal Services, down 34 jobs. Even though employment declined in this sector, the number of establishments increased by 67 to 2,887.
