 Transportation, Communication and Public Utilities employment growth returned to normal after increasing by 9,086 jobs due to a SIC code reclassification in 1995. Employment increased by 2.9% to 115,345. The average wage in TCPU increased 3.7% to $39,286. Railroad workers are not included in this report.

 Local and Suburban Transportation recorded an 11% increase in employment and a 7.8% increase in average wages. The 1996 average employment was 5,005. There were an additional 2,143 RTD employees with $65,743,443 in wages in this SIC code that were classified under local government.

 Trucking and Warehousing declined by 3,818 jobs. There was a major reclassification from Trucking and Warehousing to Air Transportation. Without the reclassification, both categories would have experienced increased employment. The number of establishments increased by 82 to 1,913. The average wage in this sector increased by 2.9% to $27,126.

 Air Transportation increased by 6,045 jobs. The majority of the increase was due to a code reclassification. The reclassification was primarily responsible for the average wage declining 6.1% to $33,334. The reclassification occurred in Air Transportation, Nonscheduled.

 Scheduled Air Transportation employment totaled 12,327 in 1996. This was an increase of 4.5% from the previous year. 86% of this employment was in Denver County and 5% in El Paso County. The average annual wage in Scheduled Air Transportation was $33,334.

 Communication employment increased by 3.9% or 1,536 to 41,199. 28,223 of these jobs were in Telephone Communications. The Pay and other Television Service sector increased by 1,564 jobs and 14 establishments to 7,559 and 154 respectively. The average annual wage increased by 6.7% to $50,642. 74% of the jobs in this sector were in the Metro Denver area. 14,893 of these jobs were in Arapahoe County. Communication employment increased by 475 to 5,536 in El Paso County.

 Electric Gas and Sanitary Service employment declined by 1,250 employees to 15,775. Layoffs contributed to the decline. The average wage increased by 3.4% to $48,808. Water Transportation and Pipelines continued to report very low levels of employment.
