Services



The Services division created 40 percent of all new jobs in Colorado in 1997, an increase of 31,780. The division has added nearly a quarter of a million jobs during the past decade. There were 2,752 more establishments in Services in 1997 than in 1996. Total wages increased by 12.1 percent.

The largest sector within Services is Business Services with 166,436 jobs, an increase of 18,651. Personnel Supply Services, which includes Temporary Help Service and Employee Leasing Service, expanded by 7,389 employees to 49,250. Personnel Supply Services increased by 372 establishments and 20,769 jobs since 1993. Computer Programming, Data Processing, and Other Computer Related Services employment increased by 6,339 jobs and 766 establishments to 44,316 and 3,600 respectively.

Health Services expanded by 4.2 percent or at the same rate as covered employment in Colorado as a whole. The sector averaged 127,611 jobs in 1997, a gain of 5,177. The fastest growing sector within Health Services is Home Health Care, which added 1,317 jobs since the previous year and 4,212 since 1993 to average 8,869 in 1997. Offices and Clinics of Doctors of Medicine employment increased by 4.4 percent to 26,785 and Hospitals increased by 2.7 percent to 43,557.

Engineering, Accounting, Research, Management, and Related Services employment increased by 1,960 to 58,181 and the number of establishments was up by 575 to 8,030. The increase was due to a 10.6 percent increase in Engineering, Architectural, and Surveying Services to 24,296.

Hotels, Rooming Houses, Camps, and Lodging Places employment increased by 2.5 percent to 39,324. There was an average of 1,316 Hotels and Motels in the state in 1997 with employment increasing from 36,872 to 37,678.

Employment in Amusement and Recreation Services increased by 1,593 to 38,061. Commercial Sports employment increased by 24 jobs to 2,575 with the average annual salary increasing by $10,510 to $89,916. Amusement and Recreation Services, Not Elsewhere Classified, which includes the State's ski areas, had employment increase by 1,133 to 26,785 with an average annual salary of $16,103.

Private Social Service's employment increased by 4.2 percent or 1,404 jobs to 34,501 in 1997. The growth was primarily due to a 915 employee increase from the previous year and a 3,505 increase from 1993 in Individual and Family Social Services which averaged 10,592 in 1997. The rapid increase in Residential Care slowed considerably to 2.3 percent to average 8,666 in 1997. Child Day Care Services employment increased by 1.5 percent to 9,975.
