Employment within Services continued to expand rapidly with an addition of 25,474 jobs. On a percentage basis, at 4.3 percent, the increase was the smallest since 1991. Average wage growth slowed with an increase of only 5.7 percent to $33,268.
As usual, more jobs were added in Business Services than any other 2-digit SIC with an addition of 11,421 jobs to 190,577. The majority of this increase occurred in Computer Programming, Data Processing, and other Computer Related Services with an addition of 10,851 jobs to 62,586 with an average annual wage of $66,384. Help Supply Services employment increased by 2,260 to 47,784.
Health Services employment stagnated in 1999, adding only 416 jobs to average 129,440. The largest increase occurred in Offices and Clinics of Dentists with 520 additional jobs leading to an average of 11,805. Offices & Clinics of Medical Doctors employment increased from 28,138 to 28,609. The largest decrease was in General Medical & Surgical Hospitals with a decline of 526 jobs to 38,426.
Professional Services added 5,444 jobs to average 67,390 in 1999. Engineering Services employment increased from 21,057 to 22,839 with an average salary of $58,252. Accounting, Auditing, & Bookkeeping recorded the second largest increase at 1,168 jobs to average 10,821. Facilities Support Services employment increased by 768 jobs to 3,080.
Hotels, Rooming Houses, Camps and Other Lodging Places experienced an increase in employment of 2.3 percent to average 41,296. Hotel and Motel employment increased from 38,634 to 39,354.
Personal Service employment continued to expand along with the population adding 600 jobs to 20,170. The largest percentage gain occurred in Tax Preparation Services at 11.1 percent to 1,017. The largest actual increase was in Beauty Shops, up 207 to 6,840 jobs.
Automotive Repair, Services and Parking added 1,218 jobs to average 22,887. The largest increase was in Automobile Parking with an increase of 257 to 1,229. Top & Body Repair & Paint Shops added 244 jobs to 4,145 and General Automotive Repair Shops added 235 jobs to average 5,303.
Social Services employment increased by 1,657 jobs to 37,769. The gain was equally distributed between three categories including Individual and Family Services up 656 to 11,939, Child Day Care Services up 555 to 11,199 and Residential Care up 546 to 9,778.
Legal Services employment increased by 188 jobs to 14,115 with an average salary of $54,922.
Repair Service employment increased by only 31 jobs to 6,525.
