Transportation, Communication and Public Utilities

Transportation, Communication and Public Utilities (TCPU) recorded its largest gain in employment and wages ever, with an increase of 11,423 jobs and $1.18 billion in wages from the previous year. The average annual wage increased by 10.4 percent to $50,950 due to increased bonuses and additional employment at relatively higher paying companies.

Seventy-nine percent of the employment increase within TCPU occurred within Communications. Telephone Communications employment increased by 5,621 jobs to 35,347 with an annual average salary of $66,274. The largest percentage increase within Communications occurred within Telegraph & other Communications, up 198 percent to 2,425, with an average annual salary of $99,080. Radiotelephone Communications continued to grow rapidly, increasing by 51.7 percent to 4,226. Decreases in employment occurred in Communication Services, NEC, down 67 jobs to 1,313 and Radio Broadcasting Stations down 29 jobs to 2,040.

The second largest category within TCPU is Transportation by Air with 25,243 jobs, an increase of 1,462. The majority of the increase in employment occurred in Air Transportation, Scheduled, up 1,232 to 14,019. Airports, Flying Fields, & Services employment increased by 7.7 percent to 2,912 jobs. Air Courier Services employment declined by 12 jobs to 7,664. Transportation by Air employment increased by 1,503 jobs to 14,348 in Denver County.

Motor Freight Transportation and Warehousing employment remained flat with an increase of only 1.8 percent to 24,132. The biggest gainer within Trucking was Local Trucking, Without Storage up 396 jobs to 7,409 while the largest decline was in Trucking, Except Local down 390 jobs to 9,629.

Electric, Gas, and Sanitary Services employment declined by a quarter of a percent to 15,236 jobs. The largest increase occurred in Sanitary Services NEC, up 76 jobs to 450. The largest percentage increase was in Sewerage Systems, up 25.4 percent to 242 jobs.

Local and Suburban Transit employment unexpectedly declined by 2.6 percent to 5,465 jobs. Six of the eight, four digit SIC codes within transit recorded a decline. The largest increase was in Intercity & Rural Bus Transportation with an increase of 66 jobs to 613. The only other increase was in Bus Charter Service, Except Local with an increase of 13 jobs to 259.

Employment in Transportation Services experienced a large increase due to approximately 550 employees being reclassified from Business Services to Packing and Crating. Transportation Services employment increased by 688 jobs to 8,232.
